The Magic of lights, christmas tree safety, prevent electrical problems in your home.

Christmas tree and fireplace

Keep yourself safe this holiday season by decorating carefully.

Make sure to take basic precautions when decorating your home. Both real and artificial trees pose an increased risk of fire.

Nowadays, electrical wires, outlets, and appliances can be found in any given room in a home. While they make our day-to-day routines more convenient, they also pose certain risks if used improperly.

Defective lighting, including electrical cords and plugs, cause almost half of all Christmas tree fires. Most electrical fires begin in plugs or cords on appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners or lamps.

Frayed cords expose the electrical wires that spark on contact with each other. Most electrical fires can be prevented!

While other causes for home fires have decreased, the percentage caused by candles has tripled in the past ten years. It’s important to remember to be safe when you’re lighting candles for any of your celebrations this holiday season.

We  want to send our very best wishes to everyone celebrating in our Jewish communities here in NY and all around the world.

5 Safety Tips to Prevent Electrical Problems in Your Home

  1. Provide Ample Clearance: Appliances and electronics generate heat, always leave a few inches away from objects like curtains and dish towels to avoid fire hazards.
  2. Be Mindful of Cords: Keep them cool and intact at all times. Don’t staple, nail, or attempt to modify them.
  3. Practice Outlet Safety: Avoid overloading an outlet. When not in use, keep it covered with caps to avoid getting shocked. Don’t leave wiring exposed, and make sure all plates are secured.
  4. Don’t Overlook Light Bulbs: They are not as safe as they look. Light Bulbs do pose some risks. Making sure that they are fully screwed in and the right wattage is used for a light, will avoid sparks.
  5. Check Your Property: Avoid branches hanging over electrical wires. Get a professional to trim them back — don’t approach them yourself.
